Over the Rainbow Bridge
Our beloved Red Baron is nearing the end of his time here on earth, we will miss him terribly…if he does not go on his own, our vet is coming on Wednesday.
He has had a full and useful life and another hard winter is just not in the cards for him. He has edema around his heart, which means it is failing. We do not know his age, but the equine dentist said at least 32.
For those of you who aren’t here on the property on a regular basis, Red Baron, in his retirement has had the run of our yard on a daily basis, eating apples, pears, grass and sometimes sneaking across the road to munch on the alfalfa in our neighbors field!
He has been used for grooming with all our new students, as he is quiet calm and gentle and deserves to be groomed every day. He got baths several times a week this summer as children learned to bathe a horse.
He has been a rock for all of us here, as he wandered the yard supervising us, he kept us all on our toes, making sure we were doing a good job, no matter what the task, he was always looking over our shoulders. As of late, he decided he liked the garage ( he never liked being in a stall) but with the open door of the garage , he could come and go as he pleased! We wondered if it was because he knew the carrots came from the fridge in the garage, and we were just waiting for him to figure out how to open the fridge and get his own carrots!
He has been a FANCY show horse, therapeutic riding horse, 4H show horse, lesson horse for Healing Hearts and the stable we bought him from used him for dressage lessons. He has given many a student (child and adult alike) the confidence they needed to go on to as faster horse! Who knows how many other wonderful things Red Baron did in his life!
We will miss his beautiful mane and tail, the prettiest on the place, his quiet , yet regal demeanor, even in his thin, elderly body, he reaked royalty. He DEMANDED clean buckets for drinking water, his meals on time, his PJ’s ( blankets) in the winter, and the care he so rightly deserved.
Into the dark good night, goes our best friend….to be free in a place where there is no more pain, he can canter again and the sun will shine on his beautiful gleeming coat forever more…
